Bold predictions are cheap. Deadlines are not. This week we grade a promise that came with a clock on it, a market record that is real but a day off from the headlines, and a comfortable belief about slavery that the count from three global agencies flatly contradicts.
HYPE OF THE WEEK
Tech - The CEO Who Put a Deadline on Your Job. The Deadline Just Passed.
The claim. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, speaking at a Council on Foreign Relations event around March 10 to 11, 2025: "I think we'll be there in three to six months, where AI is writing 90 percent of the code. And then, in 12 months, we may be in a world where AI is writing essentially all of the code." [1]
The check. The three-to-six-month window closed around September 2025. The twelve-month window has now passed too. No credible measure shows AI authoring 90 percent of production code across the industry. The strongest counter is a randomized controlled trial from METR, published July 2025: experienced open-source developers using early-2025 frontier tools were actually 19 percent slower, even though they believed they were 20 percent faster. [2] Google's most-cited internal number for AI-assisted new code sat above 25 percent, and it is still human-reviewed. [13] AI writes a lot of code. It did not hit 90 percent on the stated clock.
Mark's take: Put a date on a prediction and the calendar becomes the fact-checker.

Business - Wall Street Threw Nvidia a $4 Trillion Party a Day Early
The claim. In the week of July 9, 2025, outlets and boosters crowned Nvidia "the first company ever to hit a $4 trillion market cap," and most stamped the record on Wednesday, July 9. [3] The check. The milestone is real, but July 9 was an intraday touch. Nvidia closed that day near $3.97 trillion, under the line. It did not close above $4 trillion until the next session, July 10, 2025, when shares ended at $164.10 for a $4.004 trillion value. First ever, just a day later than the headlines say. [4]
Mark's take: The record happened. The calendar got rounded down.
Score: 24/100 - Mostly Real
Money - The $1.28 Trillion Credit Card Record Is Real. Here Is the Catch.
The claim. Amplified by LendingTree and CNBC in February 2026: U.S. credit card balances hit an all-time high above $1.28 trillion. [5] The check. True, straight from the primary source. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's household debt report shows card balances rose to $1.28 trillion in Q4 2025, the highest since the series began in 1999. [6] The only asterisk is that "record" is nominal. It is not adjusted for inflation or income, and measured against income, the household debt-service burden still sits well below its 2008 peak. [14]
Mark's take: Real record, real receipts. Just remember nominal dollars always break records.
Score: 20/100 - Mostly Real
Science and Health - Your Weight-Loss Shot Is Also a Heart Drug. Mostly.
The claim. The popular line, everywhere since the SELECT trial and Wegovy's new label, is that the same GLP-1 shot people take to drop pounds is now a proven heart medicine. [7] The check. The core of it is real and FDA-backed. In the SELECT trial of 17,604 adults who had heart disease and were overweight or obese but did not have diabetes, once-weekly semaglutide 2.4 milligrams cut major cardiovascular events by 20 percent versus placebo, with events in 6.5 percent of the drug group against 8.0 percent on placebo over about 40 months, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in December 2023. [7] On that data the FDA approved Wegovy in March 2024 to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, and stroke, the first weight-loss drug to earn a heart indication. [7] The overreach: the absolute drop was about 1.5 percentage points over more than three years, the benefit is proven only in people who already have heart disease plus excess weight, not the general public chasing weight loss, and it does not replace statins or the rest of standard heart care.
Mark's take: The heart benefit is real. A heart drug for anyone on the shot is not what the trial tested.

Culture - The 50 Million People the Feel-Good Story Forgot
The claim. A comforting line you hear all the time, that slavery ended generations ago and is history now. The check. The count says the opposite, and it comes from the people whose job is to measure it. The International Labour Organization, the human-rights group Walk Free, and the International Organization for Migration published the Global Estimates of Modern Slavery in September 2022. They put 50 million people in modern slavery on any given day in 2021. Of those, 28 million are in forced labor and 22 million in forced marriage. [8] That is about one of every 150 people alive. The number rose by 10 million from the 2016 estimate. [8] It did not fall. This is not the chattel slavery of history books. It is forced labor, debt bondage, and forced marriage happening now, in supply chains and homes on every continent.
Mark's take: The comforting version is the myth. Fifty million is the fact.
Score: 76/100 - Mostly Hype
Sports - Ronaldo's "Biggest Contract Ever" Depends on Which Number You Read
The claim. On Cristiano Ronaldo's June 26, 2025 two-year Al-Nassr renewal, outlets branded it "the craziest contract in football history" and the biggest deal in sports. [9] The check. Split the number and you get two answers. By annual pay it is true. Forbes ranks Ronaldo the world's highest-paid athlete for 2026 at about $300 million, the largest single-year haul it has tracked. [10] By total value it is false. Juan Soto's 15-year, $765 million Mets deal from December 2024 is the largest total contract in sports history, and Shohei Ohtani's $700 million also tops Ronaldo's roughly two-year total. [11]
Mark's take: Highest paid this year, yes. Biggest contract ever, no. Pick your number.

Number of the Week
$18.59 trillion. Total U.S. household debt in Q3 2025, per the New York Fed. The record credit card pile everyone quotes is about $1.28 trillion of that. Mortgages are the mountain, cards are a foothill.

Quietly Real
New pilot research from the University of Kansas Medical Center gave Alzheimer's patients 20 grams of creatine a day for eight weeks. Brain creatine rose, and measures like working memory and attention improved. It was a small, single-arm study with no control group, published in Alzheimer's and Dementia: Translational Research and Clinical Interventions in May 2025, so it shows feasibility, not a cure. [12] Still, the cheapest supplement in the gym bag showing a signal in the hardest disease in neurology is a real result that got almost no airtime.
