The claim. Netflix declared, on August 26, 2025, that KPop Demon Hunters is "the most popular Netflix film of all time, with more than 236 million views to date." [1]
The check. The number is Netflix's own, and it checks out on Netflix's own scoreboard. The film topped the all-time originals chart and later crossed 500 million-plus total views. [2] The catch is the metric, not the math. A Netflix "view" is total hours divided by runtime, counted in a title's first 91 days, and it only ranks Netflix's own catalog. So "most popular film of all time" means most first-91-day views among Netflix originals, not most-watched movie ever made. [1]

Business - The Bestseller List Has a Robot Problem
The claim. With ChatGPT, the story goes, AI now writes real, sellable books, and they are climbing Amazon's bestseller lists. The check. Half of that is true, and it is the ugly half. AI books are flooding Amazon. TechRadar and others have documented a surge of machine-written titles across Kindle Unlimited since ChatGPT launched. [3] Some briefly hit bestseller charts, but reporting by Vice found those were often click-farmed nonsense gaming Kindle's page-read payouts, not books people chose to read. [3] Most AI titles sink to the bottom with poor ranks and ratings. Amazon responded in September 2023 by capping self-published uploads at three per day and asking authors to disclose AI, with no reliable detector to enforce it. The claim. At OpenAI's August 7, 2025 GPT-5 launch, CEO Sam Altman pitched it as "like talking to an expert, a legitimate PhD-level expert in anything." [5] The check. The launch undercut the line. OpenAI's own spokesperson cited "key limitations in areas like persistent memory, autonomy, and adaptability." The presentation shipped garbled benchmark charts that Altman called a "mega chart screwup," and OpenAI apologized. [6] Days later, users revolted over the model changes and OpenAI restored the older GPT-4o. The model did set a genuine state of the art on the SWE-Bench coding test, so the capability is real. "PhD-level expert in anything" is marketing that its own maker qualified. [5]

The claim. A widely shared 2025 GOBankingRates study said incomes of $106,092 to $149,160 are needed to count as "upper-middle class" in most states, higher in pricier ones. [7] The check. The method is legitimate, the framing oversimplifies. The study uses real Census median incomes and Pew's definition of middle class. Against the Census Bureau's own figure, real median household income was $83,730 in 2024, a Pew-style band runs roughly $56,600 to $169,800 nationally, so a six-figure "upper-middle" floor is directionally defensible. [8] But the Census Bureau does not define an official "upper-middle class," and a single national number hides huge swings by state and household size.

Science and Health - A Twice-a-Year Shot Hit Zero HIV Infections. That Is Real.
The claim. Gilead Sciences said its injectable lenacapavir, approved by the FDA on June 18, 2025, showed zero HIV infections and "100% of participants remained HIV negative" in its PURPOSE 1 trial of 2,134 women. [9] The check. The primary data back it up, with one honest edge. In PURPOSE 1, among women in sub-Saharan Africa, there were zero infections, a literal 100 percent reduction. [9] In the companion PURPOSE 2 trial across broader populations, efficacy was 96 percent, with two infections. The CDC's 2025 recommendation treats it as a highly effective PrEP option, not an infallible one. [10] "100 percent" is true for one trial arm. Across everyone, it is 96 to 100.
Mark's take: The bold claim is basically true, and that is the story.

The claim. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, on July 12, 2025, called the tournament "already the most successful club competition in the world with all different measurements," and FIFA later reported it reached "an estimated 2.7 billion fans." [11] The check. The 2.7 billion is a cumulative reach and engagement figure, people who "viewed across all forms of media," not 2.7 billion unique viewers. For scale, the entire 2022 World Cup final drew about 1.5 billion. [12] On the ground, the "success" claim was contradicted by discounted tickets and stadiums with tens of thousands of empty seats at marquee matches. The roughly 2.5 million total attendance is about right. The "most successful, from all measurements" superlative leans on an inflated reach number.
Mark's take: Add up every glance across every screen and any event sounds historic.
