The biggest cultural argument of the decade is about a device in your pocket. One side says the phone rewired a generation and broke its mental health. The other side has run the largest studies ever done on this and cannot find an effect that big. This edition starts there, then checks a coin, a longevity king, and a Super Bowl record.
HYPE OF THE WEEK
Culture - Everyone Blames the Phone. The Best Studies Only Half Agree.
The claim. In his bestseller The Anxious Generation, published in 2024, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt argues that the phone-based childhood and social media are "the major cause" of an international epidemic of adolescent mental illness. The idea has become the default explanation parents, schools, and lawmakers reach for. [1]
The check. Part of it is solid. Teen anxiety, depression, and self-harm did climb sharply from around 2012, and the U.S. Surgeon General's May 2023 advisory found that adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face roughly double the risk of depression and anxiety symptoms, with up to 95 percent of 13-to-17-year-olds on a platform. [4] The weak spot is the word "cause." In a review in the journal Nature, psychologist Candice Odgers wrote that the book's core claim "is not supported by the science" and that the evidence is overwhelmingly correlational, not causal. [2] Amy Orben and Andrew Przybylski, analyzing data from roughly 355,000 adolescents, found digital technology use explained about 0.4 percent of the variation in well-being, an effect they compared to eating potatoes. [3] Something real is hurting kids. Whether the phone is the main driver or one factor among many is exactly what the strongest studies cannot yet confirm.
Mark's take: The distress is real. The single cause everyone names is the part the evidence will not sign.

Tech - Everyone Says AI Is Exploding. A New Survey Says People Are Quietly Quitting.
The claim. The dominant story is that AI only accelerates. Adoption is a straight line up, and everyone is now a daily power user of chatbots. The check. A new survey reported by TechRadar, run by its parent company Future, found heavy daily use of chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini fell 31 percent year over year. Users pointed to privacy worries, a preference for human interaction, and a fear of over-dependence. [5] It lines up with other 2026 data. A Gallup survey of Gen Z put weekly AI use around 51 percent, but excitement fell 14 points year over year to 22 percent while anger rose to 31 percent. [6] A separate survey of about 6,000 executives found more than 80 percent of companies report no productivity gains from AI so far. [7] Broad adoption is still high and most people have tried AI, and this leans on self-reported surveys, but multiple independent 2026 datasets point the same way, so the surprising stat largely holds.
Mark's take: The novelty is wearing off faster than the hype will admit.
Score: 35/100 - Mostly Real
Business - Salesforce Says AI Cut 4,000 Jobs. It Cannot Show the Math.
The claim. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, on the Logan Bartlett Show around September 2, 2025: "I've reduced it from 9,000 heads to about 5,000, because I need less heads." He also said AI agents already do "30% to 50% of the work" at the company. [8] The check. The direction is real. Salesforce leaned hard on its Agentforce product and shrank support headcount. The specific figures are self-reported and unaudited. Salesforce does not break out support headcount in its filings, so "9,000 to 5,000" cannot be checked from the outside, and a spokesperson reframed it as redeploying "hundreds" into other roles. [8] It also cuts against Benioff's own line a month earlier, that AI "augments people, but I don't know if it necessarily replaces them." "50 percent of all the work" is a round number with no method behind it.
Mark's take: Believe the direction. Do not bank the headcount math he cannot show you.
Score: 55/100 - Half and Half
Money - The Asset That "Only Goes Up" Just Fell in Half
The claim. The popular bull-market line, pushed for years by boosters like MicroStrategy's Michael Saylor, is that Bitcoin is "digital gold," a safe haven that stores value and, over time, only goes up. [9] The check. Gold does not do this. Bitcoin hit a record near $126,000 on October 6, 2025, then slid to around $60,000 by early 2026, cutting its value roughly in half in a few months. [10] That is not a first. In 2022 it dropped about 78 percent, from near $69,000 to about $15,500, and since 2013 it has had six separate falls of 70 percent or more. [9] When markets panic it has traded like a risky tech stock, not a safe haven, which is the opposite of what "digital gold" is supposed to do. Hold it long enough and it has produced big gains. But "only goes up" is not what the chart shows.
Mark's take: An asset that halves in a quarter is a lot of things. "Only goes up" is not one of them.
Score: 78/100 - Mostly Hype
Science and Health - The Man Spending $2 Million a Year to Cheat Death. Is It Working?
The claim. Tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson says his Project Blueprint, a roughly $2-million-a-year regimen of pills, diet, and constant testing featured in the Netflix documentary "Don't Die," is slowing and reversing his aging. He has said his body ages about eight months for every twelve on the calendar, and has claimed he cut his pace of aging by the equivalent of 31 years. [11] The check. Give him credit for the parts that hold up. Johnson publishes his own blood work, scans, and protocols, which is more transparency than most of this field offers, and he has genuinely improved several biomarkers. The headline is where it breaks. Aging scientists, including epigenetics researcher Morgan Levine, say the epigenetic "clocks" he leans on were never validated to support a claim like reversing aging by 31 years, and that number is unsubstantiated. [12] Lower some markers, yes. Prove you reversed aging, no. The tools cannot carry the sentence.
Mark's take: Real data, real discipline, a headline the science cannot sign off on.
Score: 70/100 - Mostly Hype
Sports - The Super Bowl "Record" That Actually Drew Fewer People
The claim. The NFL and NBC promoted that Super Bowl LX, on February 8, 2026, saw its "audience peak at an all-time U.S. record 137.8 million viewers." [13] The check. The single-minute peak record is real and Nielsen-based. The full-game story is not a record. Nielsen's final count put the average audience at 125.6 million, the second most-watched telecast ever and about 2 million below Super Bowl LIX's 127.7 million from 2025, which still holds the all-time mark. [14] A peak minute set a record. The game itself slipped about 2 percent year over year.
Mark's take: A record peak on a game that drew fewer people overall. Both can be true.
Score: 30/100 - Mostly Real
Number of the Week
127.7 million. The average U.S. audience for Super Bowl LIX in 2025, still the most-watched telecast in American history, per Nielsen. This year's game came close and fell short.

Quietly Real
That same survey of about 6,000 executives found a third of leaders use AI only about 90 minutes a week. [7] Billions are pouring into the tools. The quiet number is how little of the actual workday AI touches so far.
