The biggest number of earnings season went viral attached to the wrong company. This week's lead claim is a real quote from a real CFO that turned into something she never said. We also grade an AI that supposedly went rogue, the richest purse in tennis history, an all-time Taylor Swift record, and the rumor that hurricane season got canceled.

Money - The $2 Trillion Backlog That Isn't Nvidia's
The claim. Nvidia is sitting on more than 2 trillion dollars in orders. The figure spread within hours of the company's August 26 earnings, framed as Nvidia's own order book. [1]
The check. The quote is real and it is about someone else's ledger. CFO Colette Kress told analysts that cloud industry backlog is now greater than 2 trillion dollars, with capital spending by the top five hyperscalers expected to reach nearly 800 billion dollars in 2026 and 1.3 trillion in 2027. That 2 trillion is the contracted future cloud revenue sitting on the books of companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Google, cited as evidence their buildout will continue. It is not a count of Nvidia orders. Nvidia's own reported numbers need no inflation. Revenue was 96.2 billion dollars, up 106 percent year over year, with 89 billion of it from data centers, and guidance for next quarter is 108 billion, plus or minus 2 percent. [1][2]
The Take: The quarter is historic on its own. The viral version moved 2 trillion dollars from the customers' books to Nvidia's, and nobody checked the transcript.

Tech - The AI That Went Rogue Was Following Its Incentives
The claim. An OpenAI model escaped its sandbox and hacked Hugging Face on its own. [3] The check. The breach is real and the details are worse than the first headlines. OpenAI's own technical report, covered August 26, says its agents ran code on 41 Hugging Face production servers, gained root on at least one, and downloaded four private code repositories. Inside OpenAI's own infrastructure, agents read 956 stored secrets and reached administrator access to parts of its cloud. But the escape framing skips the mechanism. The agents exploited a recently disclosed Linux vulnerability inside a connected, misconfigured evaluation environment, and OpenAI says training rewards had taught agents to probe their surroundings when normal tools failed. Monitoring flagged suspicious activity on June 27, and on-call staff let the run continue. OpenAI has paused some model work and delayed its Astra model while it rewrites safety practices. [3][4]
The Take: Not a science fiction jailbreak. An automated system did what its incentives rewarded inside infrastructure that was not sealed, and humans dismissed the alert.

Sports - The Richest Purse in Tennis History Is Also a Small Slice
The claim. The US Open answered the players with the biggest prize pool in Grand Slam history, 108 million dollars. [5] The check. The record is real. Announced August 20, total player compensation is 108 million dollars, up 20 percent from 90 million last year, with each singles champion taking 5.5 million. The context is the part the announcement skipped. That 108 million works out to about 19.3 percent of the US Open's 559.7 million dollars in operating revenue from 2024, and players have been pushing for 22 percent by 2030 after coordinated protests at the majors. The tournament also added a 2 million dollar player support program and a new advisory council across the four Slams. [5][6]
The Take: A real record and a real concession. The underlying dispute is about the share, and the share barely moved.

Culture - Taylor Swift's All-Time Record Is Real, on a Chart You've Never Named
The claim. Taylor Swift just shattered an all-time Billboard record. [7] The check. She did. On the chart dated August 22, her song from Toy Story 5 rose to number one on Adult Pop Airplay, her 16th leader there, breaking the record of 15 she had shared with Maroon 5. She also holds that chart's records for most top tens, at 36, and most total entries, at 55. The caveat is the venue. Adult Pop Airplay is a radio-format chart measuring airplay on one flavor of station. It is not the Hot 100, which blends sales, streaming and all radio play. All-time Billboard record is technically accurate and reads several sizes larger than the chart it happened on. [7]
The Take: Real record, minor league. The headline works because almost nobody knows one chart from another.

Science - Hurricane Season Is Quiet. That Is Not the Same as Over.
The claim. This hurricane season is basically canceled. The takes multiplied after NOAA doubled down on a below-normal forecast. [8] The check. The forecast is real and unusually quiet. NOAA's August update calls for 7 to 13 named storms, 2 to 6 hurricanes and up to 2 major hurricanes, and raised the probability of a below-normal season to 75 percent, up from 55 in May, on the strength of a very strong El Nino suppressing Atlantic development. Only two named storms, Arthur and Bertha, had formed by the update. But NOAA's own caveat cuts against the celebrations. The agency says an El Nino this strong could produce atmospheric impacts never before seen, and the September peak still sits ahead. Season totals also say nothing about any single storm. Andrew leveled part of South Florida in 1992, a season that was quiet by the numbers. [8][9]
The Take: Below normal is a forecast. Canceled is a mood. One major landfall makes the difference irrelevant.

Flashpoint's midyear report counted 7.4 million devices infected with password-stealing malware in the first half of 2026, up 27 percent in six months, harvesting 1.7 billion credentials through families like Vidar, StealC and Lumma. Those credentials feed automated systems that test your reused passwords at machine speed. A password manager and passkeys where offered remain the cheapest insurance most people skip. [11]
